Get 'eggcited' about hand washing this Easter

The NSW Food Authority will be back at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year spruiking its message that clean hands are safe hands that help reduce the risk of food poisoning.

NSW Food Authority CEO Polly Bennett said the organisation’s stand proved a hit last year, with more than 40,000 visitors taking part in the interactive display which explains some of the science behind food safety.

"More than 4 million cases of food poisoning are reported in Australia each year and poor personal hygiene has been identified as one of the most common causes," Ms Bennett said.

"Our message is that washing hands well and food safety go hand in hand, correct hand washing is the most simple and yet the most effective means of reducing your risk of food poisoning.

"Good and thorough hand washing removes dirt, leftover food, grease and harmful bacteria and viruses from your hands preventing them from spreading to food, work surfaces and equipment.

Ms Bennett said following simple but effective food safety tips was important, especially when families come together to share special occasions such as Easter.

"Preparing, cooking and eating food together is a holiday tradition for many and the NSW Food Authority wants you to do that as safely as possible," Ms Bennett said.

"If you start with dirty hands then none of the other food safety measures matter, before you prepare or serve food, even just a snack, make sure your hands are clean and dry."

Visitors to the NSW Food Authority’s Easter Show stand will be guided in correct hand washing techniques using a special gel, and then assess their effectiveness under a UV light viewing area.

"It is important to educate children about the importance of washing their hands correctly, especially prior to handling food," Ms Bennett said.

"In fact the hand washing will be a requirement of entry into the nearby ‘Cooking with Kids’ exhibit."

The NSW Food Authority’s stand is located in the Food Farm section of the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and is open daily from March 26 – 8 April 2015.
